WEEK 4: April 7-13, 2024

This week, I made a big, fat mistake. I downloaded an app for calorie counting called Lose IT, and before I was charged for the premium subscription for a year, I was supposed to cancel it. I forgot and was charged $54.59. Oops. It has now been canceled, but I am paid up until March 2025.

I had a lot of bills come out this week: for car insurance, house insurance, prescriptions, a chiropractor and a massage appointment, winter to summer tire switch, groceries, and two lunches out. I also booked and paid for two nights’ stay for my niece, nephew, and I in Kamloops in August (one night on the way and one on the way home from Vancouver Island). The accommodations for that trip are now all paid for!

A couple of things I was tempted to buy this week but did not: two books I saw while I was on Marketplace (but buying books is on my NOT APPROVED list!) and some body cream (but I decided to go through the basket in my linen closet and use up all that I have there first).

A relative read my blog last week and transferred money to buy the tray for the console of my Rav4 (that I had decided not to buy because it wasn’t a need). It was very sweet. I think it is a slippery slope, though, as I am trying like hell to change my mindset and stay accountable for my blog. It’s tricky; if I say I’d like something, and magically the money appears to buy it, that reinforces an excessive lifestyle mindset. I am really looking to change my spending habits and concretely define for myself between a need and a want.

About a month ago, I finished a book by James Clear called “Atomic Habits”. It was about building healthier habits and making tiny changes in your everyday life to see big changes over time. He wrote about how the British cycling team was struggling, and big companies didn’t want them to wear their products. They didn’t want to have their good name being worn on such a losing team. Then the cycling team hired a coach who got each cyclist to set goals and make tiny changes, and a year later, they won many races! Clear wrote about the LA Lakers and professional swimmers who followed this same plan and became unstoppable. I recommend this book to anyone who feels like they are in a rut and would like to make some small changes in their life. I wanted to start spending less time on social media, so I removed Instagram and Facebook from my phone. My screen time on my phone was down this week 49% from last week! I read and listened to books so much more this week. I only went on FB on my computer a couple of times this week, to renew listings I have on Marketplace.

MONEY SAVED: 55%
I tweaked the dates of my blog, so now my week goes from Sunday to Saturday. So I had written that last week I’d transferred $44 to the Shopping Ban account, but it sort of falls into this week now!
MONEY SPENT: 45%
The money spent this week was for that premium app Lose IT, car & home insurance, tire swap, a chiro and a massage, groceries, one lunch at KFC, and one lunch after an infusion at the hospital. I booked and AIR B&B for two nights.

Born & raised in Prince Edward Island, Canada, where we had beef cows, pigs, a pony, a rabbit or two, always a dog, and many cats. My dad's favourite saying was, "A fool and their money soon part", so hence my website name. I recently (March 2024) began a shopping ban, and would like to blog about that, life with a doodle, grief and personal therapies, and my Bleeding disorder. I am excited to start writing for you, and am interested on your thoughts on my writing!

  1. You can easily get a refund during first two weeks after making a purchase if you’re using an iPhone! I had to use it more times than I can count so now I try to cancel any trials immediately 🫣
